How to Choose the Right Compression Level for Post-Surgery Recovery
After surgery, your body needs support — but the wrong compression level can slow your recovery or cause discomfort. Here's what you need to know.
What Do Compression Levels Mean?
Compression garments are measured in mmHg (millimeters of mercury):
- 15–20 mmHg – Light compression; ideal for mild swelling and everyday wear
- 20–30 mmHg – Moderate compression; most common for post-surgical use
- 30–40 mmHg – Firm compression; recommended for more intensive procedures like tummy tucks or BBLs
- 40+ mmHg – Medical-grade; prescribed by physicians for specific conditions
How to Choose
Your surgeon's recommendation always comes first. However, factors like the type of procedure, your body's sensitivity, and how far along you are in recovery all play a role. Early-stage recovery typically calls for firmer support, while later stages may allow for lighter garments.
